THE ASK
Design a moodboard for a destination / Create icons and a color palette / Develop 6 patterns, each with two colorways / Pick an athleisure brand and design an A/W collection for 2022
THE PROCESS
Moodboard
I decided to base my project on Florence, Italy. I chose this destination because I had previously created a ‘light academia’ trend board and through that I discovered amazing Renaissance artwork and architecture from Florence. To create the mood board, I found pictures of architecture, such as the Duomo and Santa Maria Novella, along with masterpieces in painting and sculpture such as Botticelli's Primavera and Michelangelo's David, all emblematic of Florence's rich cultural heritage.
Color Palette & Icons
Next, I curated a color palette inspired by the most striking hues from the moodboard. After selecting these colors, I created icons by meticulously tracing objects from the moodboard using Illustrator's pen tool.
Patterns
The patterns were designed using the icons and color palette that I created. For this part, I used illustrator and the pattern tool. The icons were traced using the pen tool. For some elements, multiple icons were used to make one design. Some designs required combining multiple icons to form cohesive patterns; for instance, individual petals were merged to shape complete flowers. This was probably the hardest step for me because it was the most tedious and it was my first time making patterns.
Creating the Collection
Lastly, to create the collection I first chose Nike as my athleisure brand of choice. After that, I decided on including a vest, two jackets, a long sleeve shirt, a short sleeve shirt, cargo pants, sweatpants, and a beanie in the collection. I used the pen tool in Illustrator to trace designs and create outlines for my pieces. With those outlines, I then took the patterns I created to incorporate them into my designs. Lastly, to present the collection, a book similar to a line sheet was created. The name of the collection, “Rebirthed,” was chosen to capture the essence of bringing back what was once the past.
